RideBackwards02Volunteers are as integral to CAN-TR's mission as the students themselves. They are the engine that drives us forward.

Being a volunteer for Hippotherapy or Therapeutic Riding uses so many more gifts than just loving ponies. Our volunteers serve as leads in the riding ring, sidewalkers, and grounds keepers.

There's a not-so-well-kept secret about CAN-TR volunteers. Most sign up thinking they'll help change lives. And they do change lives. They change the students' lives by working with them to build strength, increase mobility, and grow independence. But at the end of the day, the lives most deeply impacted are often the lives of the volunteers themselves.

For the past two years my husband, Shelley, and I took part in the Pittsboro Christmas Parade as part of the therapeutic riding program. With a wonderful Mini Horse named Jedi, who when all fashioned in his driving cart thinks he is a Clydesdale Horse, we invited our therapeutic riding friend Laura Thomas to join us in the cart. Laura, who was very excited to take part in the parade and the driving cart experience thoroughly enjoyed the cart ride, laughing and whooping at all the people lining the sidewalks, telling Jedi to trot, walk and stop. After the parade ended, she made us promise to take her again the following year, and of course we did. We had as much fun watching Laura enjoy the moment as Laura herself. As some very smart person once said, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a person.” I can honestly say that there is double satisfaction when you have the combination of horse and child with special needs.
